Preparing for Your Photoshoot (Without Losing Your Mind)

Whether you're stepping in front of the camera for the first time or you’ve done it before but still get a bit nervous (totally normal, by the way), preparing for your photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, with a few simple tips (and a sprinkle of humour), you might even enjoy it.

As someone who's had the pleasure of photographing everyone from nervous business owners to confident creatives, here's what I've learned: a little prep goes a long way.

1. Know What You’re After (and Communicate It)

This sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often people say "just some nice photos" and then realise halfway through they actually wanted something completely different. Headshots? Branding? Something for your website banner? Tell your photographer what you need. We’re good, but we’re not mind readers.

2. Dress Like You… But Polished

You don’t need a full makeover. You do want to feel like yourself, just a version that slept well, drank water, and maybe ironed their shirt. Choose clothes that make you feel confident. Patterns are fine, but maybe skip anything too busy (unless that’s your brand vibe).

Bonus tip: bring a spare outfit or two. Spills happen. So do nerves. Sometimes you just want options.

3. Don’t Overthink Hair & Makeup

Keep it simple. If you wear makeup daily, wear it. If you don’t, don’t start now. Just aim to look like the best version of you. Avoid big hair changes right before a shoot (unless you love living dangerously).

4. Props, Products, Personality

If this is for your business, bring things that help tell your story. Laptop, notebook, camera, cupcakes – whatever makes sense. Little touches add big personality.

5. Trust the Process

You might feel a bit awkward at first. That’s OK. Most people do. A good photographer will guide you, chat with you, and make sure you don’t look like a deer in headlights. By the end, you might actually enjoy yourself.

6. Hydrate, Rest, Breathe

This one feels very wellness-influencer but it’s true: tired, stressed people don’t feel great on camera. A good night’s sleep and a glass of water go a long way.

Final Thoughts

Your photoshoot is a chance to show the world who you are – whether that’s polished and professional or creative and quirky. Preparation helps, but don’t worry about being perfect. Just be you (the slightly-more-prepared version).

If you're thinking about a headshot or branding session, I’d love to help. And I promise, it’ll be far less scary than you think.
